Northport Youth Sailing School (NYSS)

Instructors

 We're very pleased that all three of our instructors are returning in 2013. We will continue to provide instruction at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels as well as adding Little Puffs, our introductory program for eight and nine-year olds. We'll also have races on Wednesday night for Pico sailors. 

Dustin Webb is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He has a degree in secondary education and just completed his second year of teaching at Lake City High School in Lake City, MI. Dustin teaches social studies & speech, directs the school play, and coaches forensics, track and field, and cross country. He has sailed for over 25 years, having sailed before he could walk, on the waters of Northport Bay.

He grew up just north of Milwaukee, WI during the school year, but has always felt more at home in Northport. This is his fifth year as an instructor at the Northport Youth Sailing School.

Becca Halstedt, hailing from Zionsville, Indiana (yes there is sailing amidst the cornfields) has been sailing for the love of the sport for the past five years. She has sailed Optis, Finns, 420s, Flying Juniors, and her family's Catalina Capri 22 on Eagle Creek Reservoir, but her passion is racing lasers throughout Indiana, Ohio and Michigan on behalf of the Eagle Creek Sailing Club. Along with racing, she has assisted in a youth sailing camp for three summers. Becca loves art and is pursuing an Industrial Design major at University of Cincinnati's DAAP Program. This is her fourth year with NYSS.

Delvon Napier is an engineering graduate of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City. Although he grew up in Oakland, CA, he has lived in Traverse City on and off since 2005.

Delvon started his sailing career around the age of 14 on beautiful San Francisco Bay and the coast of California. He learned how to sail on an historic scow schooner called Alma and has worked on other schooners around the country. He has taught small boat sailing in California.

Delvon also enjoys travelling, camping, other water sports and writing. He teaches writing and composition. This is his third year with NYSS.

Senior Counselors, Junior Counselors and Harbor Mice

Some of 2012's Junior Counselors will be returning this year as Senior Counselors. They'll be taking the same US Sailing certification class that our instructors have taken and are at least 16 years old. We'll also have a crew of Junior Counselors (14-15 year-olds) who will take a US Sailing course in Northport this June. We're also hiring some 'Harbor Mice.' They are 13 and under. All of our counselors and Harbor Mice are advanced sailors and rated to sail a Pico.
